[regarding her in-vitro procedure] I would really rather do this at Cedars, you know. I like my doctor.

Oh, so do I, Cassie, so do I, but he can't hold a candle to the specialists here. Besides, these facilities are first-rate. They've got the best security of any clinic in the Midwest. It's like a fortress.

Cassandra Elizabeth:
A fortress. Why would we need a fortress to get pregnant?

Sabrina Fairchild:
[narrating] Once upon a time, on the north shore of Long Island, some 30 miles from New York, there lived a small girl on a large estate. The estate was very large indeed and had many servants. There were gardeners to take care of the gardens, and a tree surgeon on a retainer. There was a boatman to take care of the boats: to put them in the water in the spring, and scrape their bottoms in the winter. There were specialists to take care of the grounds: the outdoor tennis court and the indoor tennis court, the outdoor swimming pool and the indoor swimming pool. And there was a man of no particular title who took care of a small pool in the garden for a goldfish named George. Also on the estate, there was a chauffeur by the name of Fairchild, who had been imported from England, years ago, together with a new Rolls Royce. Fairchild was a fine chauffeur of considerable polish, like the eight cars in his care, and he had a daughter by the name of Sabrina. It was the eve of the annual six meter yacht races, and as had been tradition on Long Island for the past 30 years, the Larrabees were giving a party. It never rained on the night of the Larrabee party, the Larrabees wouldn't have stood for it. There were four Larrabees in all: father, mother and two sons. Maude and Oliver Larrabee were married in nineteen hundred and six and among their many wedding presents was a townhouse in New York and this estate for weekends. The town house has since been converted into Saks Fifth Avenue. Linus Larrabee, the elder son, graduated from Yale, where his classmates voted him the man Most Likely to Leave his Alma Mater Fifty Million Dollars. His brother, David, went through several of the best eastern colleges for short periods of time, and through several marriages for even shorter periods of time. He is now a successful six-goal polo player, and is listed on Linus's tax return as a six hundred dollar deduction. Life was pleasant among the Larrabees, for this was as close to heaven as one could get on Long Island.

There's a very famous Perkins School in Boston. They're supposed to do wonders.

Captain Arthur Keller:

Kate Keller:
I think the captain will write to the Perkins School.

Captain Arthur Keller:
Katie, how many times are you going to let them break your heart?

Kate Keller:
Any number of times. As long as there's the slightest chance for her to see or hear.

We have this new psychiatrist that comes in two days a week and of course I pick her name out of the grab bag, I have to pick something up for her tomorrow. Would you put that on the list, I have no idea what to get your father. What's Jackson giving you, do you know?

Furniture, well, my. Must be nice to be married to a rich lawyer. What's it for, the living room?

No, for the nursery.

[seeing M'Lynn's stricken look]

We wanted to tell you when you and daddy were together, but you're never together so it’s every man for himself. I'm pregnant.

I realize that.

Well is that it? Is that all you're gonna say?

What do you want me to say?

Well, something along the lines of congratulations.

Would it be too much to ask for a little excitement, not too much I wouldn't want you to break a sweat or anything. It's in July. Oh Mama, you have to help me plan. We're gonna get a new house. Jackson and I are going house hunting next week. Jackson loves to hunt for anything.

What does Jackson say about all of this?

He's so excited. He says he doesn't care whether it's a boy or a girl, but I know he really wants a son so bad he can taste it. He's really cute about the whole thing. It's all he can talk about: Jackson Latree, Jr.

Does he ever? Listen, I mean when doctors and specialists give you advice. Does he listen? I know you never do, does he? Huh? What? Well, I guess since he doesn't have to carry the baby it really isn't any of his concern.

Mama, I want a child.

What about adoption? You've filled out all the applications.

Mama, no judge is gonna give a baby to someone with my medical records. Jackson even put out feelers about buying one.

People do it all the time.

Listen to me. I want a child of my own. I think it would help things a lot.

I see.

Mama, you worry too much. In fact I never worry 'cause I always know you're worried enough for the both of us. Jackson and I have given this a lot of thought.

Has he really? Well, there's a first time for everything.

Don't start on Jackson.

Your poor body has been through so much. Why would you deliberately do this to yourself?

Diabetics have healthy babies all the time.

You are special Shelby. There are limits to what you can do.

I went in about my eyes a lot of times, and had to go and see specialists but you see what they do is they clamp your head in this big clamp and they want to bounce things on your eyeballs. Well, you can't, you know, I couldn't be doing with that, you know, so I'm pulling my head out of this clamp all the time. That's another occasion when they told me I could just go me own way so I got thrown out of there as well.
