novelty

The power of habit and the charm of novelty are the two adverse forces which explain the follies of mankind.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
It is only a short step from exaggerating what we can find in the world to exaggerating our power to remake the world. Expecting more novelty than there is, more greatness than there is, and more strangeness than there is, we imagine ourselves masters of a plastic universe. But a world we can shape to our will is a shapeless world.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
By Modernism I mean the positive rejection of the past and the blind belief in the process of change, in novelty for its own sake, in the idea that progress through time equates with cultural progress; in the cult of individuality, originality and self-expression.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Of all the passions of mankind, the love of novelty most rules the mind. In search of this, from realm to realm we roam. Our fleets come loaded with every folly home.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Jargon is the verbal sleight of hand that makes the old hat seem newly fashionable; it gives an air of novelty and specious profundity to ideas that, if stated directly, would seem superficial, stale, frivolous, or false. The line between serious and spurious scholarship is an easy one to blur, with jargon on your side.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
The paradoxes of today are the prejudices of tomorrow, since the most benighted and the most deplorable prejudices have had their moment of novelty when fashion lent them its fragile grace.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
In my opinion, I think sarcasm and humor in a song, without turning it into a novelty song, is really charming.More [12/29/2005 12:12:00]

I was beyond the novelty of homosexuality. I just dated the people I liked. Mostly I was concentrating on acting, fighting to do what I wanted to do careerwise.More [06/07/2006 12:06:00]
I was shot when I think it was number one. That was the catalyst for the interest in the show. Certainly it went on for a long time after that but that's what really kicked it off. Of course a lot of people watched it just because of the novelty of the situation.More [11/23/2006 12:11:00]
With it all, I cannot help being overwhelmed by self-doubts. I hope there is something worthy in my writings and not merely the novelty of a black face associated with the power to rhyme that has attracted attention.More [12/05/2007 12:12:00]
Roy: How about a gross of fluorescent condoms for the the novelty machine in the men's room? I mean, those are fun even when you're alone. We're talkin' the hula hoop of the nineties.
Lancaster Bowl Manager: Look, I've told you. We don't need nuthin'. We don't even have a novelty machine in the men's room anymore.
Roy: And you call yourselves a bowling alley?More [06/04/2008 12:06:00]

What were you when you came here five years ago - a little college girl from a school of journalism. I took a doll-faced hick...

Hildy Johnson:
Well, you wouldn't take me if I hadn't been doll-faced.

Walter Burns:
Well, why should I? I thought it would be a novelty to have a face around here a man could look at without shuddering.

Ebenezer Blackadder:
Ah, my dear Millicent, come for her dinner.

[Looks at Ralph]

Ebenezer Blackadder:
... and she seems to have brought the fish course with her! Who, my dear, is the huge halibut in the trousers?

Ralph:
I think... it's me!

Millicent:
This is Ralph - he's my fiance!

Ralph:
We're in love!

Ebenezer Blackadder:
Oh, dear. Ill-conceived love, I should warn you, is like a Christmas cracker: one massively disappointing bang, and the novelty soon wears off.

Ralph, Millicent:
[they laugh obnoxiously]

Ebenezer Blackadder:
Shut up!

Millicent:
Oh, Mr. Blackadder! What's happened? You've changed from the nicest man in England into the... the horridest man in the world!

Baldrick:
I was thinking the same thing myself.

Ebenezer Blackadder:
[hits Baldrick in the back of the head] ... when spoken to.

[to Millicent]

Ebenezer Blackadder:
I would explain, my dear, but I fear that you wouldn't understand - blessed as you are with a head that is emptier than a hermit's address book!

Doctor:
Mr. Burns, I'm afraid you are the sickest man in the United States. You have everything.

Mr. Burns:
You mean I have pneumonia?

Doctor:
Yes.

Mr. Burns:
Juvenile diabetes?

Doctor:
Yes.

Mr. Burns:
Hysterical pregnancy?

Doctor:
Uh, a little bit, yes. You also have several diseases that have just been discovered - in you.

Mr. Burns:
I see. You sure you haven't just made thousands of mistakes?

Doctor:
Uh, no, no, I'm afraid not.

Mr. Burns:
This sounds like bad news.

Doctor:
Well, you'd think so, but all of your diseases are in perfect balance. Uh, if you have a moment, I can explain.

Mr. Burns:
Well...

[looks at his watch]

Mr. Burns:
[the Doctor puts a tiny model house door on his desk]

Doctor:
Here's the door to your body, see?

[bring up some small fuzz balls with goofy faces and limbs from under the desk]

Doctor:
And these are oversized novelty germs.

[points to a different one up as he names each disease]

Doctor:
That's influenza, that's bronchitis,

[holds up one]

Doctor:
and this cute little cuddle-bug is pancreatic cancer. Here's what happens when they all try to get through the door at once.

[tries to cram a bunch through the model door. The "germs" get stuck]

Doctor:
[Stooge-like] Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo. Move it, chowderhead.

[normal voice]

Doctor:
We call it, "Three Stooges Syndrome".

Mr. Burns:
So what you're saying is, I'm indestructible.

Doctor:
Oh, no, no, in fact, even slight breeze could...

Mr. Burns:
Indestructible.

Laura Lancing:
Yes, of course.

Helen Brittas:

Laura Lancing:
Helen, that's fantastic!

Helen Brittas:
Well, after today's events I thought the news had rather lost its novelty value.

Bill Lee:
Did I ever tell you about the man who taught his ass to talk? His whole abdomen would move up and down you dig farting out the words. It was unlike anything I had ever heard. This ass talk had sort of a gut frequency. It hit you right down there like you gotta go. You know when the old colon gives you the elbow and it feels sorta cold inside, and you know all you have to do is turn loose? Well this talking hit you right down there, a bubbly, thick stagnant sound, a sound you could smell. This man worked for a carnival you dig, and to start with it was like a novelty ventri-liquist act. Real funny, too, at first. He had a number he called The Better Ole that was a scream, I tell you. I forget most of it but it was clever. Like, "Oh I say, are you still down there, old thing?" "Nah I had to go relieve myself." After a while the ass start talking on its own. He would go in without anything prepared and his ass would ad-lib and toss the gags back at him every time. Then it developed sort of teeth-like little raspy in-curving hooks and start eating. He thought this was cute at first and built an act around it, but the asshole would eat its way through his pants and start talking on the street, shouting out it wanted equal rights. It would get drunk, too, and have crying jags nobody loved it and it wanted to be kissed same as any other mouth. Finally it talked all the time day and night, you could hear him for blocks screaming at it to shut up, and beating it with his fist, and sticking candles up it, but nothing did any good and the asshole said to him Its you who will shut up in the end. Not me. Because we dont need you around here any more. I can talk and eat AND shit. After that he began waking up in the morning with a transparent jelly like a tadpoles tail all over his mouth. This jelly was what the scientists call un-D.T., Undifferentiated Tissue, which can grow into any kind of flesh on the human body. He would tear it off his mouth and the pieces would stick to his hands like burning gasoline jelly and grow there, grow anywhere on him a glob of it fell. So finally his mouth sealed over, and the whole head would have have amputated spontaneous - except for the EYES you dig. Thats one thing the asshole COULDN'T do was see. It needed the eyes. But nerve connections were blocked and infiltrated and atrophied so the brain couldnt give orders any more. It was trapped in the skull, sealed off. For a while you could see the silent, helpless suffer-ing of the brain behind the eyes, then finally the brain must have died, because the eyes WENT OUT, and there was no more feeling in them than a crabs eyes on the end of a stalk.

I don't understand this. If I didn't ever see you before, and I don't think I did, then I don't think you should be here in this hallucination because in my experience the mind which is where hallucinations come from shouldn't be able to make anything up that wasn't there to start with that didn't enter it from experience from the real world. Imagination can't create anything new can it? It only recycles bits and pieces from the world and reassembles them into visions. Am I making sense right now?

Prior Walter:
Given the circumstances, yes.

Harper Pitt:
So when we think we've escaped the unbearable ordinariness and, well, untruthfulness of our lives it's really only the same old ordinariness and falseness rearranged into the appearance of novelty and truth. Nothing unknown is knowable.
