astronomy

[first lines]

Narrator:
[spoken over a shot of outer space] Needles in a heavenly haystack. There are more stars in the heavens than there are human beings on Earth. Through telescopes men of science constantly search the infinitesimal corners of our solar system seeking new discoveries, hoping to better understand the laws of the Universe. Observatories dedicated to the study of astronomy are set in high and remote places, but there is none more remote than Mt. Kenna Observatory in this part of South Africa.

Rocky Jones:
Without a fixed position in outer space, they're unable to make astronomy an exact science.

Tara:
Danger? Oh, danger! Well, I shudder to think what the vice president of the astronomy club would call DANGER - what did you do, jaywalk or something?

Frasier:
Hello, Ethan. I'm listening.

Ethan:
Hi, Dr. Crane.

Frasier:
How old are you?

Ethan:
I'm thirteen.

Frasier:
Well, what can I do for you?

Ethan:
Well, I'm having a lot of problems with the other kids at school. They're always beating me up.

Frasier:
Why do you think that's so?

Ethan:
Probably because I'm smart. I have a 160 IQ. I'm in the astronomy club and I hate sports.

Frasier:
Well, you know, Ethan, the other children are just acting out of jealousy and immaturity, and I know it doesn't help much right now, but the day will come in the next few years when you will have the last laugh.

Ethan:
...That's it?

Frasier:
[surprised] Yes.

Ethan:
Frankly, Dr. Crane, I find that advice patronizing, simplistic and, in all candor, uninspired. The real surprise here is that they pay you to dole out this balloon juice.

Frasier:
Ethan, where are you calling from?

Ethan:
Home.

Frasier:
Well, if any of Ethan's classmates are listening, you know where he is, and he can't stay in there forever. Thank you for your call.

Ron:
[as Harry lays unconcious] Looks a bit peaky, doesn't he?

Fred Weasley:
Peaky? What'd you expect him to look like? He fell fifty feet.

George Weasley:
Yeah, c'mon, Ron. We'll walk you off the Astronomy Tower and see how you come out looking.

Harry:
Probably a right sight better than he normally does.

[he opens his eyes to see everyone is with him]

Hermione:
Harry! How are you feeling?

Harry:
[he slips on his glasses] Brilliant.

Fred Weasley:
Gave us a right good scare, mate.

Harry:
What happened?

Ron:
You fell off your broom.

Harry:
Really? I meant the match. Who won?

[silence, no one is answering]

Hermione:
No one blames you, Harry. The Dementors aren't meant to come on the grounds. Dumbledore was furious. After he saved you, he sent them straight off.

Ron:
There's something else you should know, Harry. Your Nimbus - when it blew away? - it sort of landed in the Whomping Willow. And well...

[he hands Harry his broken broom stick]

Feast of Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, Teacher, 373 Our thoughtful observer who is outside the Churches has done a good deal of thinking on his own. The discoveries of modern physical and biological science, of astronomy, and of psychology, have profoundly influenced his conception of the "size" of God. If there be a Mind behind the immense complexities of the phenomena that man can observe, then it is that of a Being tremendous in His power and wisdom: it is emphatically not that of a little god. It is perfectlMore [03/29/2018 05:03:36]
Commemoration of Nicholas Ferrar, Deacon, Founder of the Little Gidding Community, 1637 To me there is a much more frightening ignorance in our modern world than the "ignorance of the heathen". I am referring to the almost total ignorance of the content and implication of the Christian Faith shown by many "clever" people today. Frankly, I find it horrifying to discover that men who are experts in their own line -- in astronomy, genetics, or nuclear physics, for example -- have no adult knowledge of what the Church oMore [03/29/2018 05:03:36]

Mark Tobey fills his canvases with elliptical, calligraphic lines, beautiful whirls that seem at first glance to be completely abstract and to come from nowhere at all except his own subjective musing. Does the evolutionary doctrine clash with religious faith? It does not. It is a blunder to mistake the Holy Scriptures for elementary textbooks of astronomy, geology, biology, and anthropology. The mathematical thermology created by Fourier may tempt us to hope that, as he has estimated the temperature of the space in which we move, me may in time ascertain the mean temperature of the heavenly bodies: but I regard this order of facts as for ever excluded from our recognition. Astronomy is useful because it raises us above ourselves; it is useful because it is grand; ....
