How can we hope to remain economically competitive in a world in which... 90% of Dutch high-school students take advanced math courses and 100% of teachers in Germany have double majors, while the best we can say about our pocket of excellence is that 75% of [American] students have learned to critique tactfully?More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]

I have always taken as the standard of the mode of teaching and writing, not the abstract, particular, professional philosopher, but universal man, that I have regarded man as the criterion of truth, and not this or that founder of a system, and have from the first placed the highest excellence of the philosopher in this, that he abstains, both as a man and as an author, from the ostentation of philosophy, i.e., that he is a philosopher only in reality, not formally, that he is a quiet philosopher, not a loud and still less a brawling one.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
The idea for which this nation stands will not survive if the highest goal free man can set themselves is an amiable mediocrity. Excellence implies striving for the highest standards in every phase of life.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
The great difficulty is first to win a reputation; the next to keep it while you live; and the next to preserve it after you die, when affection and interest are over, and nothing but sterling excellence can preserve your name. Never suffer youth to be an excuse for inadequacy, nor age and fame to be an excuse for indolence.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Badness you can get easily, in quantity; the road is smooth, and it lies close by, But in front of excellence the immortal gods have put sweat, and long and steer is the way to it.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
If it were not somewhat fanciful to suppose that every human excellence is presented, as it were, in one kind of being, we might believe that the whole treasure of morality and order is enshrined in the female character.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]

Each year, New York's famed International Automobile Show brings together the world's newest quality motor cars. But this year's most dramatic display is not new. It is a 35-year-old limousine that radiates more glamour and glitter than the most exotic 1965 models. This superb specimen that steals the spotlight is a Rolls Royce Phantom II, hand-crafted in England in 1930. The color, brilliant yellow; mechanical trim, flawless; value, thirty thousand dollars. It's more than age, or elegance, or excellence of design that earned this Rolls the place of honor at the show. What brought it here was a unique adventure that started in London about a year ago.

We take particular pride in the excellence of our ballet, monsieur.

I see why.

[looking at Meg Giry]

Especially that little blonde angel!

Madame Giry:
My daughter, Meg Giry.

[looking at Christine] And THAT exceptional beauty? No relation, I trust?

Madame Giry:
Christine DaaƩ. Promising talent, Monsieur Firmin, very promising.

DaaƩ, did you say? N-n-no relation to the famous Swedish violinist?

Madame Giry:
His only child. Orphaned at seven, when she came to live and trained in the ballet dormitories.

An orphan, you say?

Madame Giry:
I think of her as a daughter also.

Betty Warren:
[Betty's Third Editorial Voice Over] Wellesley girls who are married have become quite adept at balancing their obligations. One hears such comments as, "I'm able to baste the chicken with one hand and outline the paper with the other." While our mothers were called to the workforce for lady liberty it is our duty, nay, obligation to reclaim our place in the home bearing the children that will carry our traditions into the future. One must pause to consider why; Ms. Katherine Watson, instructor in the art history department, has decided to declare war on the holy sacrament of marriage. Her subversive and political teachings encourage our Wellesley girls to reject the roles they were born to fill.

Katherine Watson:
Slide - Contemporary art...

Connie Baker:
No, that's just an advertisement...

Katherine Watson:
Quiet. Today you just listen. What will future scholars see when they study us, a portrait of women today? There you are ladies: the perfect likeness of a Wellesley graduate, Magna Cum Laude, doing exactly what she was trained to do. Slide - a Rhodes Scholar, I wonder if she recites Chaucer while she presses her husband's shirts. Slide - hehe, now you physics majors can calculate the mass and volume of every meatloaf you make. Slide - A girdle to set you free. What does that mean? What does that mean? What does it mean? I give up, you win. The smartest women in the country, I didn't realize that by demanding excellence I would be challenging... what did it say?

[Walks over to a student and picks up her copy of the editorial]

Katherine Watson:
What did it say? Um... the roles you were born to fill. Is that right?

[Looks up at Betty]

Katherine Watson:
The roles you were born to fill? It's, uh, it's my mistake.

[Katerine drops the student's paper back onto her desk]

Katherine Watson:
Class dismissed.

[Katherine walks out of the classroom]
