Macy Gray

Macy Gray

A unique melange of soul and hip-hop characterizes Macy Grays's debut album, On How Life Is. Born and raised in Ohio, 29 year-old Gray studied classical piano as a child, though refusing to sing and barely speaking because of her self-described ďfunny" voice. That funny voice is now a signature sound that has been compared to the likes of Billie Holiday and Tina Turner. After moving to Los Angeles and enrolling in the screenwriting program at USC film school, Gray teamed up with fellow musicians to write lyrics that she would eventually record. Hearing Grayís voice prompted the leader of a local jazz band to give her a call. Soon thereafter she joined the band which played the Los Angeles hotel circuit. Gray began developing a solo act and was soon performing at L.A.ís Viper Room, which led to a mini-tour of the USA.After teaming her with producer Andrew Slater (Fiona Apple, the Wallflowers) began recording in a number of Hollywood studios. Grayís debut album On How Life Is was released in the summer of 1999. The single ďI Try" was a smash hit receiving rave reviews. Epic Records signed Gray in 1998 and All of the album lyrics were written by Gray and described as stories of her life. ďThe record is little snippets of things that have happened to me, that inspired me to write. Itís ďOn How Life Is", but itís just my life. Itís not like Iím speaking for the whole world; I donít really have some big message. The record is just based on what Iíve gone though and I hope people can relate."Recently, Macy Gray is become a commanding figure on the music scene. Surely we will be continuing to hear from her in the near future.Source: canehdian.com

Am I a fruitcake? I don't know. Perception is reality, so if I sit here and say, "I'm not a fruitcake, I'm a lemon cake," it doesn't matter. What you see me as in your world is what I am; it doesn't matter what I am - do you know what I mean? To me, I know what my real problems are - and they're certainly not about cake. And that's just the way it is.More Macy Gray quotes [03/29/2018 05:03:36]
It's like any other job: there's a method to it and it's really important to get that down. I'm still working on it, I got a lot to learn. It's one thing to make records but it's a whole 'nother capacity to be a star - whatever that is.More Macy Gray quotes [03/29/2018 05:03:36]
