arts

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Music must take rank as the highest of the fine arts - as the one which, more than any other, ministers to the human spirit.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
The more a man cultivates the arts the less he fornicates. A more and more apparent cleavage occurs between the spirit and the brute.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Music of all the arts has the most influence on the passions and the legislator should give it the greatest encouragement.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
For me, the principal fact of life is the free mind. For good and evil, man is a free creative spirit. This produces the very queer world we live in, a world in continuous creation and therefore continuous change and insecurity. A perpetually new and lively world, but a dangerous one, full of tragedy and injustice. A world in everlasting conflict between the new idea and the old allegiances, new arts and new inventions against the old establishment.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Silence is one of the great arts of conversation.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
The arts and inventions of each period are only its costume, and do not invigorate men.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
New arts destroy the old.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Each of the arts whose office is to refine, purify, adorn, embellish and grace life is under the patronage of a muse, no god being found worthy to preside over them.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Unprovided with original learning, unformed in the habits of thinking, unskilled in the arts of composition, I resolved-to write a book.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
More than in any other performing arts the lack of respect for acting seems to spring from the fact that every layman considers himself a valid critic.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
If it were not for the intellectual snobs who pay -- in solid cash -- the tribute which philistinism owes to culture, the arts would perish with their starving practitioners. Let us thank heaven for hypocrisy.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Books to judicious compilers, are useful; to particular arts and professions, they are absolutely necessary; to men of real science, they are tools: but more are tools to them.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
We need to teach the highly educated man that it is not a disgrace to fail and that he must analyze every failure to find its cause. He must learn how to fail intelligently, for failing is one of the greatest arts in the world.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Having a thirteen-year-old in the family is like having a general-admission ticket to the movies, radio and TV. You get to understand that the glittering new arts of our civilization are directed to the teen-agers, and by their suffrage they stand or fall.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
As the unity of the modern world becomes increasingly a technological rather than a social affair, the techniques of the arts provide the most valuable means of insight into the real direction of our own collective purposes.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Thoughts give birth to a creative force that is neither elemental nor sidereal. Thoughts create a new heaven, a new firmament, a new source of energy, from which new arts flow. When a man undertakes to create something, he establishes a new heaven.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
But the one thing you should. not do is to suppose that when something is wrong with the arts, it is wrong with the arts ONLY.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Only conservatives believe that subversion is still being carried on in the arts and that society is being shaken by it. Advanced art today is no longer a cause --it contains no moral imperative. There is no virtue in clinging to principles and standards, no vice in selling or in selling out.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
A Bachelor of Arts is one who makes love to a lot of women, and yet has the art to remain a bachelor.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
No girl who is going to marry need bother to win a college degree; she just naturally becomes a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy after catering to an ordinary man for a few years.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Genius is, to be sure, not a matter of arbitrariness, but rather of freedom, just as wit, love, and faith, which once shall become arts and disciplines. We should demand genius from everybody, without, however, expecting it.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
In the arts of life man invents nothing; but in the arts of death he outdoes Nature herself, and produces by chemistry and machinery all the slaughter of plague, pestilence, and famine.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Insurrection is an art, and like all arts has its own laws.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
As a thinker and planner the ant is the equal of any savage race of men; as a self-educated specialist in several arts she is the superior of any savage race of men; and in one or two high mental qualities she is above the reach of any man, savage or civilized!More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Culture is the arts elevated to a set of beliefs.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
A strange thing has happened -- while all the other arts were born naked, this, the youngest, has been born fully-clothed. It can say everything before it has anything to say. It is as if the savage tribe, instead of finding two bars of iron to play with, had found scattering the seashore fiddles, flutes, saxophones, trumpets, grand pianos by Erhard and Bechstein, and had begun with incredible energy, but without knowing a note of music, to hammer and thump upon them all at the same time.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Letting a hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend is the policy for promoting the progress of the arts and the sciences and a flourishing culture in our land.More [01/01/2000 12:01:00]
Kira: Look up "muse" in the dictionary. Go on, page seven twenty-eight. Read it!
Sonny: Okay, all right. I'll read it.
[reading]
Sonny: "Muse; any one of the nine sister..."
Kira: Like the album cover? Mm-hmm?
Sonny: [reading] "Any one of the nine sister goddesses in Greek mythology, presiding over song, and poetry, and the arts and do you believe me now, Sonny?" How'd you do that? What's going on?
Kira: [Points at the TV] The television!
[the television comes on and is showing a movie in black and white with two characters, Nick and Vargas, having a conversation when Nick pulls a gun]
Nick: What should I do, Sonny? Dive at him, um, or make a martini?
Vargas: Who you talking to?
Nick: Sonny Malone. He doesn't believe Kira's a muse.
Sonny: How can you be talking to me? You're a movie!
Vargas: I ain't got time for this, Malone. Brenda's the only one that saw me at the racetrack. Now if the lady says she's a muse, she's a muse.
[Brenda Trent enters, played by Kira, who is still also outside of the television screen]
Vargas: Who's that? Brenda!
Sonny: Kira!
Brenda Trent: Sonny.
[Sonny slumps into a chair]
Nick: I think he needs a drink.
Kira: It's okay; I'll take care of it. Thanks!
Nick: Good luck on the opening of your joint, kid.
[Puts his hands up]
Nick: Wish I could be there.More [10/18/2005 12:10:00]
Alan Shemper: When I was at camp, my favorite activity was always arts and crafts. Or, as we used to call it: arts and *farts* and crafts. We used to make drawings... cave drawings! Which is my way of saying we were cave men. I went to camp so long ago, that I can remember saying "sticks and stones may break my bones" and meaning it! I went to camp so long ago that fucking Jesus Christ was my counselor! And my best friend hadn't fully evolved yet! His name was Ug and he walked on all fours! There were two epidemics when I went to camp: head lice, and the plague - the Bubonic plague!More [12/30/2005 12:12:00]

I was just there for a couple of days. It was fantastic. I was totally intimidated by Jennifer Garner. She's incredibly fit and strong and supple and she has all these kind of martial arts and weapons skills. And then there's me just eating the donuts laughing.More [12/27/2006 12:12:00]
